Stationery Aid’s co-founder Jan Schutt has been named a finalist in the prestigious Westfield Local Heroes Awards, recognising his outstanding contribution to equity in education and sustainability across Queensland.
Jan is the driving force behind Stationery Aid , a volunteer-powered charity that rescues unused school stationery supplies and refurbishes them to redistribute to students experiencing disadvantage.
Each year, thousands of exercise books, pens, pencils and other essential learning tools are collected, sorted, and packed into booklists that give every child the resources they need to thrive at school.
Their work not only supports young people—particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and those from vulnerable backgrounds—but also prevents tonnes of perfectly good stationery from ending up in landfill.
“If we can give every student the tools to learn, we give them the chance to grow, succeed and feel included in the classroom,” Jan said.
The Westfield Local Heroes Awards shine a spotlight on everyday Australians who create positive change in their communities. Winners receive a
$20,000 community grant, which Jan plans to use to expand Stationery Aid’s reach, train volunteers, and provide even more school packs to families in need.
Local residents are encouraged to support Jan by voting online. A win would mean greater impact for students and a stronger step towards sustainable education.
